23rd Annual Children’s Hospital Tournament hosted by

the Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association kicks off today!

Winnipeg, May 28th, 2014 -- The Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association (WYSA) is proud to announce the 23rd Annual Children’s Hospital Tournament will kick off today with 171 recreational and developmental teams, ranging from 9-18 years old!

Teams are coming in from across the region, including from Kenora, Ontario, Yorkton, Saskatchewan and from Minnedosa, Portage la Prairie, Brandon and Neepawa, Manitoba.

“The tournament started with only four teams back in 1991. Now it’s one of the largest tournaments in western Canada,” said Carlo Bruneau, executive director of WYSA. “We want to thank the thousands of players, coaches, referees and volunteers in the soccer community who’ve made this event so successful every year.” The tournament will feature games at Grant Park and John Blumberg, but home base will be John Blumberg soccer complex in Headingley.

Over the 22 years, the tournament has raised more than $315,000 for the Childrens’ Hospital Foundation which helps fund direct patient care, clinical trials and research at the Manitoba Institute of Child Health. “The love of play and the encouragement you have shown the over 120,000 sick children that visit the hospital each and every year is outstanding,” states Lawrence Prout, President & CEO of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. “Your support has made an impact in assisting the Foundation purchase vital medical equipment, fund ground-breaking research and bring vital programs to life that offer comfort to families and sick children during difficult times.”

WYSA is the largest youth soccer league administrator in Manitoba. In addition to managing all premier and developmental leagues (from ages 9 through 18), WYSA oversees recreational soccer leagues for community centres from ages 13 to 18. It also supports district soccer associations who administer the recreational leagues for ages 9 through 12. In recent years, WYSA has managed indoor high school soccer and has played a key role in bringing soccer programming to disadvantaged youth in Winnipeg’s core areas.

Thank you to the soccer community for your interest in this very worthy fundraiser for the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba!

Welcome to the home of the Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association's 2014 Children's Hospital Tournament website!! The 23rd year of this tournament will take place May 28 - June 1, 2014 with the majority of the matches being played at the John Blumberg Sportsplex.

Registration for this year's tournament is $300 per team and will be limited to 150 total teams and/or 8 teams per division. Once capacity has been reached, teams will be placed on a waiting list. Registration is not considered complete until payment is received.

This year, WYSA is hoping to raise even more funds for the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba by encouraging teams to register and fundraise using this online site. Registered participants can solicit friends and family to make instant and secure online donations and receive a charitable tax recepit. Click here to register your team now!

In 1991, the Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association held its first Children's Hospital Tournament with only four teams and raised $500 for the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. Since then, the tournament has become extremely popular and has reached capacity every year since 1999.

In 2013, the Tournament had 202 total teams and raised $25,000 for the Foundation!

Over the course of the Tournament's history, the annual event has now raised over $315,000 for the Children's Hospital Foundation. The success of the Tournament, held during the last week of May/first weekend in June, comes form the many volunteers and teams involved. We could not accomplish what we have without the support of the many volunteers, including the referees who have donated their time, field marshals, and members of the Disctrict Clubs.
